Being There For Others Through The Rough Times

Before school starts at our house we have Bible Study. My six and five year old jump up on our big leather couch eager to learn what God’s word says. Their very favorite thing to do is act out a Bible Story.

Today we read about Jesus Forgives and Heals a Paralytic from Mark 2:1-12 NKJV

The two main parts of this story that my children acted out was,

Then they came to Him, bringing a paralytic who was carried by four men. And when they could not come near Him because of the crowd, they uncovered the roof where He was. So when they had broken through, they let down the bed on which the paralytic was lying.

AND

“I say to you, arise, take up your bed, and go to your house.” 12 Immediately he arose, took up the bed, and went out in the presence of them all, so that all were amazed and glorified God, saying, “We never saw anything like this!”

During our time of acting out this story I pondered – What do hurting people need?

Who were these four men who brought the paralyzed man on the mat to Jesus?

I wonder if these men knew Jesus.  What were these four men doing before they took this man to their Savior? Why did they come to his aid? How far did they have to carry him?

These men were determined to get this man help. They lowered him through the roof. The four men went against all odds and did exactly what they set out to do. They didn’t give up when they saw the crowd. They stayed strong in their faith.

I can’t help but think how this made the man on the mat feel. I think he felt loved and maybe for the first time, he felt that his life mattered.   What was this man guilty of and how long had he been feeling shame? Did the kindness of these men prepare his heart to receive love and healing from Jesus?

I could see in my son’s and daughter’s eyes that they liked acting out this part of the story. They pretended that they were tired from carrying the mat, hot, and anxious. My daughter was concerned and nurturing. My son was mighty and strong. They played their roles well. They were eager to help. Never once did they say just leave him there, it’s too hard to help him.

Today Justin and Kalee learned that this is what Christians do for one another. Christians set aside their own agenda and look out for the best interest of others.

I played the man on the mat. I contemplated as to whether I should get up and dance or if I should stumble around a bit.   I don’t think that this man started jumping up and down when he got up. I think his bones ached and his muscles had no idea what to do.

My kids were quit surprised when I fell down the minute I got up. They didn’t know if they should cry or laugh when I flapped around helplessly. Suddenly my son who was playing Jesus grabbed my hands and said, “It’s O.K.” He walked me one step at a time reminding me that its o.k. I followed Him as he walked in front of me holding me up. I thanked him.

Kaylee played the part of being my friend and she held me up. She rubbed my back. When I fell she helped me back up.

My children taught me to walk and stand. They stayed with me until I could do it alone. They watched from down the hall to make sure I was successful before they left me to move on.

Today my children reminded me that we need to help each other get back up on our own two feet when we fall. We need to learn from one another. We need to lean on each other.

The Blogging world is filled with amazing Christians who love the Lord with all their hearts.   I learn so much from heart felt Christians who share their stories. They show by example in the words they use.   Writing is an art!!! Thoughts are crafted upon pages to inspire and support others.

That is why I have invited writers to share their stories about depression. By sharing our stories we show others that they matter and that we care about them. Our stories can direct others to Jesus. We walk along with the broken hear-ted when we are transparent. Consistently posting God’s truth teaches us how to live.

  1. I had a small bout of depression last year. I’ve been looking for a way to share without it being negative. Thank you for sharing, I’ll be looking more into that when I get to my computer (on my phone now).

I love that your children are so into learning bible stories! I’m working with my 3 year old on how to pray. Right now he thinks it’s just something fun we do to stall before going to bed. Acting out bible stories sounds like so much fun!

it is so fun watching my kids grow through God’s word. I think that is neat that you are encouraging your son to pray. It’s great that he thinks it is fun. God wants us to have fun with us through prayer time too and not only the serious times. My little girl sometimes is silly when talking to God. It helps me remember that we serve a God that wants us to be in relationship with Him during the good times as well as the hard times. Thanks for stopping by.
