Have you ever had one of those days where time gets away and you are still in your pajamas at dinner time, and the hair on your head is everywhere? I did yesterday.
I felt like my head was going to fall off it hurt so bad from a migraine. There goes my day I thought to myself. I had planning to do for home school and no preparations were made.
Around 10:30 my headache went away and I got up to face my day. I made coffee and quickly I planned a few things to do for school.
The academic part of the day went well, but my kids were at my heels to bring out the art. I was so tired from not feeling well and I just couldn’t bring myself to it.
When it was 3:00 I finally decided to take a shower and get dressed for the rest of the day.
Just as I was drying myself off my daughter came running into the bathroom yelling at me that there was an emergency. When I pulled my shower curtain back I couldn’t believe what I saw.
Kaylee was standing on a stool with hands under running water and orange paint was everywhere. She had orange paint on her pink princess dress. There was a trail of orange going up and down the hall. The kitchen floor was orange.
Kaylee had started a finger painting project on a sheet of typing paper. She wanted to do more with the other colors she had collected while I was in the shower.
“Yes Kaylee you can do more, but first we need to clean up the paint that is all over the floor.”
It was bad timing because it was date night for me and my husband. I had to be ready within the next hour and a half. As I was calming myself down internally my dog went pee all over the kitchen floor. Two messes, no makeup, no dinner on table for kids and still in my pajamas.
Why on earth would I say yes? Because I love art and I wished that I would of thought about finger painting earlier in the day for my artist.
Kaylee smiled and giggled as she moved her arms through the paint. She was dressed pretty in her pink princess dress and her whole upper body was full of paint. I gave her a bath for the second time in one day.
My little artist exploded in creativity and after a long day in my Pajamas I felt like one thing that really mattered was accomplished and that would be my daughter danced in joy. My artist made my day as she fell in love with paint. I was delighted to see her so excited. For me that is what I live for as a mom. I live to see my children move freely in their passions.
I was ready in time for my date and we went to paint at a ceramic place. There I found my love for paint and I had a blast. I couldn’t help but smile throughout my evening when I thought about my Kaylee being her carefree self.
Why not say yes to finger paint?

Oh Lisa, what a “classic” day! I’ve had some of those. But these days, with teens, it’s more like butter, sugar, and flour all over the floor as they bake, or cook. I’m glad you were able to relax enough to let them paint. Pretty admirable, in my book. (Not sure I could have. 🙂 ) And how cool that you and your husband go on a date and do ceramic painting! Totally cool.

Oh my gosh! What a day you had. My dear sister, you know how much I love you, right? I have to tell you that I giggled my way through your post. I just kept seeing your little girl’s face all a glow. Doggy pee-pee on the kitchen floor just made me laugh right out loud! I know it is not much fun to be “in the moment” on that kind of a day. But, getting to peek in on your day through your blog, brings back so many memories from when I had little ones at home… I truly am happy that you and your husband still found the energy to go out on your date. Even if your evening was filled with MORE paint!

Oh. my. goodness. I love this! This so totally and completely reminds me of our middle daughter. She takes on the world, full-force, mess in-toe, loving life. SOOOO much fun to get lost in child’s play. One of my favorite things in the world! Beautiful post!!

It’s great having you come by today Kortney! Life as a Mom really is full of great adventures. I keep hearing over and over from Moms with grownup kids that it goes too fast. I’m trying to slow down and stay in the moment. It’s so important to enjoy every moment.

My word! What a day! The wonderful thing is that your daughter will remember the finger paints, and you will be able to laugh at this someday. So glad you were able to find a positive in a day that could have easily been remembered for the negative!

OH!!!!! I love this! Just love it! Well, the finger painting and gleeful child part anyway! You made me smile as I visit you from Equipping Godly Women. Although I have had no children of my own, I have taught hundreds of kids. When public school had room for creativity (back when) I loved to give them some freedoms and finger painting was one. These were first and Kindergarten age children. So of course they loved that. I did other things like cooking with them and then eating the goodies and making a quilt and who knows what else but it was as much my joyful period as it was there.

How fun!!! It sounds like you have wonderful memories about being a teacher. Thank You for sharing. I can tell you were very passionate about your time with the kids. It is a joyful time and your comment helps me to remember that my little ones would love for their mommy to bring out more fun and more often. I used to teach preschool and I loved it.
