New years often bring resolutions for change, whether to stop a “bad” habit or to start a new “good” habit.
So often we start out strong, only to find ourselves fail shortly thereafter.
Thinking of all of this got me thinking about a familiar passage of scripture, found in Matthew (14:25-31a, NLT):
About three o’clock in the morning Jesus came toward them, walking on the water. When the disciples saw Him walking on the water, they were terrified. In their fear, they cried out, “It’s a ghost!” But Jesus spoke to them at once. “Don’t be afraid,” He said. “Take courage. I Am here!”
Then Peter called to Him, “Lord, if it’s really you, tell me to come to you, walking on the water.”
“Yes, come,” Jesus said.
So Peter went over the side of the boat and walked on the water toward Jesus. But when He saw the strong wind and the waves, he was terrified and began to sink. “Save me, Lord!” he shouted. Jesus immediately reached out and grabbed him.
The story is more than a lesson on Peter’s faith failing. The point is to always be close enough to God, so that when you fall – He is there to lift you back up again.
Can I please encourage you in the fact that we all do fall sometimes. But don’t give up! When you fall, get back up!! If you fail again – then get back up AGAIN!
“The godly may trip seven times, but they will get up again.” (Proverbs 24:16a, NLT)
God makes everything new. If you fail this year in your efforts – do not stop there. Every day His mercies begin afresh (Lamentations 3:23). Every day can be your “New Year’s Day.”
