Slow Down and Breathe in the Children’s Laughter

norman_rockwell_-_hey_fellers_come_on_in_-_google_art_projectA whole new world of parenting happens when we stay in the moment and listen to our children giggle. But sometimes we get too busy with our duties to notice our children dancing and singing.

Lately I’ve been so focused on home school preparations and activities that I’ve been too busy to enjoy my children. I don’t appreciate my children when I am worried about getting my work done. Instead I push them away. That’s why I’m writing this post. I want to do life different and I want to share with you some things I am working on.

Schedules, responsibilities, and keeping up with daily routines are exhausting and overwhelming. I feel like I am one step away from burn out. You know the feeling where there is no excitement and every task feels too heavy to lift?   I don’t like feeling this way because I get grumpy and snap at my children. This is not how I want to parent. I want my actions and words to show them love. I want to have fun with my kids.

It’s o.k. to put our to-do-list down for a bit or throw it away and enjoy our children. We will only have our children for a very short season in our life. Someday they will be all grown up and out the door. Now is the time for us to enter into our children’s world and breathe in their beauty.   Let their playfulness, joy and freedom to be silly become a part of our day-to-day lifestyle. We were made to enjoy this time with our children. Let’s take some things off of our to-do-list and leave some days blank on our calendar and spend time getting to know them better.

I appreciate parenting more when I stop being so busy. It’s hard to stay balanced. But, it’s one of the most important things we can do for ourselves and our children.   It’s up to us to make parenting fun.

What are you going to take off of your to-do-list so that you can enjoy your children today?

I think I’m going to leave my house dusty another day, leave my laundry basket full and read to my kids their favorite stories. Or I might take out my camera and take pictures of them playing.   I’m going to breathe in their joy and celebrate life as a Momma.

My friends if you are feeling burned out please don’t feel guilty. It happens.  A verse that helps me when I’m over tired and frustrated comes from Psalm 91:4

“He will cover you with His feathers and under His wings you will find refuge.”

Sometimes I have to just stop what I’m doing, rest for a bit, and listen for the children’s laughter.

Children’s laughter is contagious and it’s music to my ears.

Thanks for joining me today and please feel free to leave a comment.

  1. Thanks for the oh-so-important reminder of slowing down and really being in the moment with our kids. I plan to play games with my two after school and turn up the music for a little dance session. I love your blog and appreciate the time and effort that you have put into this community. Wonderful job, my friend!
