Are They Learning? – Homeschooling Strategy by Lisa Brown

Do you struggle when your kids have a hard time learning something?

Well you shouldn’t.  (and I’m working on not letting it get the best of me)

I use to emotionally drain myself from worry when my son or daughter struggled with a lesson until I realized that my kids need to be challenged.  Challenges help us learn to preserver when things get tough.  God didn’t intend for learning to come easy to us.

It’s important for kids to problem solve and to have goals to work towards. Therefore, I have stopped rushing my kids through lessons.   The process is much more valuable than the outcome.  It’s in the process that we discover our strengths, weaknesses, and interests.

We can rest assure that God will give our children the wisdom, gifts, and talents that He has in store for them.  Let’s not get hung up on grades, finishing lessons on a scheduled time, and feeling disturbed because they didn’t score as high as we would have liked them to on an assessment.

Just because a test score is low doesn’t mean our kids are not learning.  They are learning something even when we don’t see it.  This is where we have to put our faith in God and trust the process.  We must keep doing what we are doing and be patient.

The best part of homeschooling is encouraging our children to be curious and creative.   We are free from controlling our kids to think and be like others.

Test scores do not define a child’s level of intelligence.

I want my kids to have the skills they need to be successful.  But more than that, I want them to find their strength in God and to accept that they are here on earth to be God’s servants.

I’m a proud Mom!   My son prays to God and asks Him for help.  My daughter has empathy for others and desires to give.

I’m a better teacher to my kids now that I have defined my why behind what I do.   I do what I do because I want my kids to be brave and courageous.  I want them to embrace their gifts and soar.

Don’t worry moms about how fast your kids are picking up a skill.  Instead enjoy them and have a fun time learning with them.  When we worry we have a tendency to get impatient and agitated.  We mean well but when our kids see us frustrated it makes them feel like they are failing.   Kids usually act out when there is too much stress being put on them to perform.   At least that is what I have noticed in my kids.

Homeschooling is a wonderful opportunity for us to get to know our kids.  We learn about them through watching and listening.  In order to do this we have to be willing to let go of our own agenda and lighten up on our expectations.   And this is not an easy thing to do for me.  But it’s the right thing!!!

May God’s peace take the place of worry in our homeschooling efforts.
