A Book and Art Project For Kids to do in Fall.

I took this picture at the Denver Zoo

A walk through the leaves with my kids reminds me of an art project that we did a year ago. We gathered leaves in a bag and placed them creatively on contact paper. We first taped the sticky side up onto the table. When we were done decorating it with the leaves we found, we put green construction paper over the leaves for a background, and gently pushed it down on the contact paper to make it stick. I hung my children’s masterpiece on the wall from October through December, maybe a bit longer? It was beautiful. Kaylee and Justin were so proud.

We might just have to go get contact paper and do it again. But maybe this time we will make placemats instead of a wall hanging for thanksgiving dinner.

I just checked out a really good Children’s Picture books from the Library about leaves.

Leaf Man by Lois Ehlert.

I fell in love with this book the minute I saw the cover. The artist made a man out of real leaves and it’s cute. The kids were amazed. On the inside back of the book I read the Authors Note on how he did the pictures. He traveled all over collecting different kinds of leaves and then he created the Leaf Man art with his color copies of leaves.  Every picture in his book is created with a different unique pattern done just with leaves. So very colorful!  Must have book.

This is a great way to show children an example of art work.

Author starts out by asking?

“Where does a Leaf Man go when the wind blows? Do you know?”

Story is about the adventure Leaf Man goes on.

We enjoyed Leaf Man’s adventure too.

Your turn,

What fall books do you like to read with the kids? What kind of fall leaf projects do you like to do?

  1. Thanks for stopping by. When I was a kid I used to collect leaves, put them between wax paper and than place them in a heavy book. After a few months I would modge podge them to wood or bark. I might have to do that this year with the kids. I hope you enjoy Leaf Man. I need to return it to the library but I think I am going to have to re-check it out.
