Just Keep Me Company and Talk to Me
by Angel Buff
My 4-year-old daughter loves to “help” me. She really wants to help [and be a help] most of the time. Some days and some projects allow for extra attention, patience and instruction with ‘how’ to help.
Other days and other projects, it just isn’t possible – despite her eagerness. Some things are just too advanced for her right now, or too dangerous.
On these days – with these projects – you will find her repeating, “Mama, can I help?” “Mama, what can I do?” “Mama, can I do that?”
Sometimes she will even start – without permission – grabbing things in an attempt to “help,” though really she is only getting in the way and not helping at all.
And as I try to maintain my patience through all of this and try to explain to her that the job is just a little too much for her right now and that the best way she could help me right now would be by just keeping me company and by talking to me.
Oh, what God has taught me through my child!!
During one of these days, God began to have that time of patience and instruction for me.
How often I want to “help” God! Though, just like a child sometimes I am only getting in His way. I have really good intentions, but all the good intentions doesn’t make up for the fact that some jobs I am just not qualified for yet. And some things are even too dangerous for me to be involved with.
Sometimes God wants me to just be still, spend some time with Him – keep company with Him – talk to Him – and let Him do the work. All the while, I can watch in amazement at what He is doing.
He instructs through the Scripture, “Be still.” He reminds me that, “He is God!” He says, “Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything.” All I need to do is talk to Him and thank Him for all He has done, and all He is going to do. (References Psalm 46:10a and Philippians 4:6)
God knows what He is doing. God knows how to handle it. I just have to trust Him.

I am convinced that God set up parenthood this way, in large part, to teach us about our relationship to Him. There is so much to be learned from our interactions with our kiddos! Love this, Angel. Very encouraging!

Rebecca, I agree — God knew there are things we would understand differently [once we had children] about our relationship with Him.
Thanks for reading, and for your encouragement!
