We heard a voice of a child inside and so we knocked a couple of more times. Finally a lady with dirty hair and a filthy shirt opens the door. I smelled something rotten. I thought for sure I was going to pass out.
As we walked in her apartment trash was everywhere and her kitchen sink was piled high with greasy pans. Smelly clothes stacked in piles everywhere. She led us to a locked up bedroom where her children were.
I’m not sure how long they had been in there by themselves. They both had on dirty pajamas that were too small. It was obvious that they had not taken a both in a several days.
They had my heart the minute our eyes met!
In an instant I knew that I was called to help their mamma.
Back at the office my Supervisor asked me if I would be willing to take on such a rough case. I was an Intern Case Worker at the time and she was concerned for my well-being. This was an emotional situation for all of us at the agency. It was heartbreaking.
I didn’t hesitate to say yes.
I saw something in this Mom that I couldn’t explain. I felt that she needed to know that she mattered. God’s living spirit was moving in me to care for her.
I spent a couple of weeks with her helping her make changes for her children’s sake. She had a couple of children taken from her already. Deep down I had a feeling that she would probably not be able to keep these two either. To this day I don’t know.
Our Agency Felt That She needed a chance to change.
I helped her clean up her apartment, do laundry, set goals, and grocery shop.
After a few meetings she pulled me aside and shared a family secret with me about her kid’s uncle. It was that secret that no one should have to tell.
She asked me to help her report sexual abuse. She was concerned for her daughter.
Something Changed in her.
Its stories like these that we tend to ask God why He allows things like this to happen. This very well could be your story.
We might even wonder from time to time if God really cares about us at all.
Some of us might be angry with God. We may be shaking our fists at Him.
God where are you? Where were you? What kind of God are you?
I saw God show up for this Mom and little girl. God’s love moved through me to help them. The mom felt cared about through my kind actions and this led her to care about her daughter. We did get help for the little girl. Her abuser was reported and he no longer could hurt her. God took care of this family.
God Cares about You and Me Too.
Let’s take a moment every day and think about all that He has done for us!
11 For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Jeremiah 29:11 (NIV)
No matter what our mess is, God is working something out. Even if it doesn’t feel like it. We have to keep our eyes open and watch.
So heartbreaking, Lisa, but how humbling and lovely that God would use you in this. We have no idea how our actions may have lasting impact, do we? May we remember that ALL people matter to our Father, and may we be willing to show them that truth as He calls, yes?

Good for you Lisa that you helped this woman have dignity again and for seeing the potential in her. That’s what are Great God does with us. He sees the potential we don’t see in ourselves!
